The Challenge
A utility company in the Southeastern United States had an older VPI System that offered minimal control over the equipment or the process. It was manually operated, featured outdated controls and gauges, and was difficult for operators to learn. The VPI System also lacked any type of VPI process data monitoring and collection software.
The Solution
HeatTek recommended, designed and built a VPI System Automated Controls and Components Upgrade Package. The new state-of-the-art control panel provided customer-specified control of vacuum and pressure levels, part and resin temperatures, process cycle timing, and preprogrammed cycles based on motor voltage class.
All key process data is now captured by the onboard computer. The project also included comprehensive chamber safety upgrades, such as a cylinder counterbalance valve and limit/pressure switch interlocks, along with resin-compliant valves and piping to complete the system.
The Results
The VPI System now operates the same every time, so the quality of parts is consistent. Due to the implementation of the controls, the resin experienced less stress and stayed in proper chemical balance.
The process data recording system provides a complete record of the process. The integrated maintenance feedback system enables the customer to implement a predictive maintenance schedule. This has led to reduced system downtime and associated costs.
Additionally, the operators can be trained properly, and because of the system’s automation, they are free to perform other tasks, making them more productive.
